What’s this? It might not be magic in the air, but a $40-off deal on the LEGO The Nightmare Before Christmas set is pretty special. Designed for adult fans of the iconic stop-motion animated film, this Halloween Town set was released in 2024. And as a LEGO collector with over 100 sets, I have to share that this is one of my all-time favorite sets, so much so that it has earned a dedicated space on my bookshelf all year round.
$160 might seem like a lot for LEGO, but given that this set is slated to retire at the end of the year, the price is more likely to increase, not decrease. Don’t believe me? The popular Hocus Pocus cottage retailed for $230, and since its retirement last year, it’s now close to $400 on the resale market. Yes, I am kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance.
There are so many tiny things that make this set special for The Nightmare Before Christmas lovers, including the variety of minifigures. Of course, there’s Jack Skellington, Sally, and pumpkin-nosed Zero, but there’s also Santa Claus, and Lock, Shock, and Barrel in their walking claw-footed tub. The Mayor comes with two different faces so you can spin the brick around to swap his look.
You can also pose the characters in multiple ways, with Jack and Sally atop spiral hill with the yellow moon as a backdrop, or interacting in front of the green fountain at Town Hall. Jack’s house is the centerpiece, and the buildings can be connected or separated for display.
The details aren’t just on the exterior of the building, either. As you build, you’ll spot many The Nightmare Before Christmas easter eggs inside—like a skeleton under the floorboards. Spin Jack’s home around and you’ll see that his room includes a blackboard with plans for “Making Christmas.”
As someone with a lot of experience in building LEGO, I’d say this is more of an intermediate set, and it took me probably 8 to 10 hours to build over a weekend. If you are a beginner, be prepared for it to take a bit longer. When it’s finished, this set is nearly 11 inches tall and 20 inches long, so you’ll need to carve out some shelf or table space.
